MATCH ACAIKST VICTORIA. VICTORIANS MAKE 274. By Cable—Press Association -Copyright Received 20, 7 p.m. Melbourne, November 20. Ideal weather and a good wicket favored the match between England and Victoria to-day. Foster and Douglas renewed the attack, Foster bowling well, turning from the oil, and making great pace from the pitch. Runs came slowly. Laver was cauglit low in the slips and Armstrong was dismissed second ball by a unanimous appeal for a catch at the wickets. Kortlang was clean bowled by Hitch, who relieved Foster at 235. Kortlang, in his 218 minutes of steady cricket, scored four fourers. Three wickets had fallen without a run having been scored, and the bowling was of a higher standard than Saturday's. When Matthews was dismissed Hitch, who got none for 2f> on Saturday, had taken two wickets for 35. He was assisted by the wind. The remainder of the batting was indifferent. The innings lasted 273 minutes. Hobbs and Kinnear opened the second innings of the Englishmen against the bowling of Laver and Maerow. Ilobbs began stylishly. Kinnear was more confident than in the first innings. He put in 41 minutes' 1 batting, when he was dismiised. Rhodes, when at two, gave a chance of stumping off Matthews. Fifty occupied fifty-live minutes. Hobbs gave a difficult chance at point off Laver when 31. At 64 Kyle relieved Laver, who had bowled 13 overs, seven maidens and secured one wicket for 19 runs. Hobbs charmed both sides by his skilful and effective placing, lie reached 50 in 'ninety-three minutes.

Laver was absent after tea, resting his injured leg, Kyle and Macrow bowling. A hundred was registered for 105 minutes' play. Then the scoring slowed considerably. Kyle bowled twelve overs, five being maidens, for eleven runs. At 112 Armstrong relieved Macrow. The. crowd was impatient at the slowness of the scoring and cheered ironically when Hobbs drove Kyle lmrd to the oif for four. Hobbs waved his bat in acknowledgment. Notwithstanding the slow scoring the batting was attractive, Hobbs especially in his off driving and cutting. One hundred and fifty occupied 158 minutes. When 40 Rhodes gave a chance, .Carkeek failing to take a return. 'Hobbs when 82 was missed at mid-on off Kyle by Spencer, a substitute. Armstrong in the silips missed Rhodes when o2 oft Kyle. Hobbs, however, was soon afterwards caught at mid-oil' by Matthews. He had batted three hours, and his score included six fourers. Rhodes was at the wickets for 144 minutes before he gained a fourer from a nice off drive. Smith was short lived.

The fielding was good. The, attendance was 0000, and the wicket lasted well. VICTORIA.—First Innings.
