GENERAL NEWS.
A rumor is gaining currency here, on what foundation I do not know, iliat Mr. G. A, Marehiint will be offered a seat in the Legislative Council. Such an appointment would do credit to the Council. Mr. Marchant is one of the ablest men in Taranaki's local government to-day, and he has given freely of his time and his talents for the benefit of the public. That he should have been defeated in the recent county election came as more than a surprise. There was a silent organisation at work, and as the county chairman was looked on as a "ecrt" to be returned, no great number of his supporters troubled to vote. Reports this evening, concerning the condition of Messrs. Geo. Mcßain and Arnold Jones, both of whom are suffering from appendicitis, are more encouraging. Mr. W. Ryan, secretary of the Stratford Bowling Club, has received the programme of the Northern Howling Association's tournament, to be held next January. This year there will be no single rinks. Stratford will be well represented; probably by two or three rinks at least. Mr. J. D. Ilealy, Who is becoming well known amongst breeders of Jersey stock,, has reason to feel complimented by the remark of a prominent North Taranaki Jersey man to the effect that lie has the nucleus of one of the linest Jersey herds in the Dominion. Mr. Healy's two Hawera prize-winners will be competing at the New Plymouth show. A movement is afoot to establish a post office at the Pembroke road creamery. The .Stratford Lawn Tenuis Club's lawns were in excellent order for the
opening on Saturday, and an enjoyable I time was spent by a good number of i members'. Mr. tF. P." Uniacke leaves to-night for Auckland, en route to Australia, to meet Mrs. Uniacke, who is returning from the Old Country. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile' Agecy Co., Ltd., held a bull fair at their Stratford yards to-day. There was a. yarding of !)3 bulls, but the quality, was not as high on the average as at pre- 1 vious fairs, and bidding was not spirited. Good pricfes were realised for good quality stuff, the farmers of to-day holding the opinion that the progeny of, grade bulls witli cows of mixed breeds will'not have any distinctive dairying qualities. Most dairymen go for a pure-bred sire with which to build up the milking herd. A- fanner mentioned .to me this morning that '• the recent cold blasts ' had proved the efficacy of shelter busli. lie remarked }hn,t on farms where the stock was well sheltered the - milk yield was better thaii, on those farms where only barbed Wire, fences and fallen logs came between the, "Mountain" wind and the milch cow. There's 1 logic in that, too. Mr. W,„J. Newton, who is in charge of the Stratford Electrical Supply Company s works, has received a letter from • a friend in Dunedin enclosing the following clipping from the Otago Daily Times, which his Correspondent suggests' may be interesting 'to him, seeing that on' Mr. Newton's advice the Stratford Company is installing aMirless Diesel engine at its' works''At; Tuesday's meeting of the Electric Power and Lighting Committee of' tile- Citv Council the tenders for the installation of the new plant at the'converter. station,.were considered, when it vas decided to recommend the aceeptmce of Xfessfs. J. Chambers and Son's ender of-£14,749. The plant will include me 500'b;h.p.,engine of the Mirless-Diesel, nake,. another 750 b.h.p., a 340 kwt genirator, and a, 500- kwt. generator. The iresenf steam plant is to lie sold." What s good 'for Dunedin will probibly suikUS ;hare. ; lorppgh of this year, inclusive of alterations' to promises for which permits': hii l \ , e !
