MOA ROAD BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Moa Road Board was held on Saturday, when there were present: Messrs. H. Trimble (chairman), G. A. Bridgeman, J. W. Collingwood, J. Williams, A. Chafd, A. Lawrence, A. Corkill, F. J. Anderson, and R. T. Williams. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The report of the engineer (Mr. S. Orbell) was read as follows: Upland road: The formation at the deviation was nearly completed. The contractor had made a good start with the formation, and had made the track to the river and also carted out a few yards of stone to the crusher site. Bristol road bridge: lie had arranged a fortnight ago with a man to do this work, but so far a start had not been made. The small contract for formation on the Bristol, road was well under way. The metalling bad not yet been started, hut the contractor would start on Monday. lllatapiko Koad: lie had inspected the culvert on this road as requested, and considered the ground unsuitable foi testing. He, however, moved that it be tested. He. estimated the cost of a tun-; nell at £3O, and the concrete culvert at '£l2s.

Concrete pipes: The shed for the manufacture of pipes was almost completed. He understood that the niouldi would not arrive until the end of next month at the earliest, as the makers were awaiting a consignment of iron. (HEALTH REPORT. The District Health Officer (Wellington) wrote that Inspector Kendall, reporting on a case of tuberculosis in the district, said that the house was a fiveroomed one, old, isolated, and in a healthy position, but the room which had been occupied by the patient was small and ill-ventilated and with no proper window to open. The conditions of the room were such as to render any person liable to contract the disease, especially if there was a tendency that way, and he was of opinion that the Council should issue a requisition to the owner of the premises to have the windows double bung or otherwise made to open freely. The whole room should be thoroughly cleaned out, all paper (if such existed) removed, and the place repapered, or, if painted, to be repainted, in order to prevent any possibility of a recurrence of the disease in any one occupying the room.

The chairman understood that the Board had handed over its powers to the Hospital Board. He would, however, inquire into the matter. Mr. Oorkill thought that it was a pity the inspectors did not pay more attention to the towns and not worry the country, when there was no house perhaps within a mile.

■Mr. Chard remarked that it was not advisable to go against the Health Officer.

Mr. Corkill asked why should a man be compelled to re-paper when perhaps he did not want to or could not afford to. He had no time for inspectors when they worried people like that. He supposed they had to pretend to be doing something to earn their money. MAXCAXUI BRIDGE SUBSIDY. The Minister of Public Works wired that the telegram from the chairman re subsidies was receiving attention, and notification was received later, under date November 14, that £l7O had been voted as a subsidy for the Mauganui river bridge approachs.

Mr. R. T. Williams remarked that this was better than nothing.

The chairman said that Mr. Hine had told liim that there was nothing for the Moa road district on the Supplementary Estimates, but Hon. R. McKerizie recog- ' nised that he had made a promise to the chairman of the Road Board, and would endeavor to get something voted in the miscellaneous works account, with the above result. It was resolved to utilise the money on the approaches on both sides of the bridge. DAVIS ROAD. The chairman stated that he had waited on the Waitara West Road Board and explained the position the Moa Road Board had taken in regard to the Davis road. I-le had pointed out that the Moa Road Board wished to have a free hand in the repairs necessary, the Waitara West Board to pay half cost. He understood that the Board had agreed to this, but had seen in the papers that they limited the amount to £9. He still thought that they should hold out foxhalf the cost. MONTHLY STATEMENT. The monthly statement showed receipts had been £156 7s 10 (rates £IOS 17s 4d, contractors' deposits £37, pipes, etc., £lO 10s Gd), and the expenditure £B(i lis 4d. In the loan account the credit balance was £ 1843 15s 2d, and the general account £594 Is lid. DURHAM ROAD WEST. Twenty-live ratepayers on the Durham road west drew attention to the state of the road for .about 20 chains. They pointed out that it would cost £l5O to metal it, and petitioned the Board to raise a loan. The chairman said that there were enough signatures to get the loan, and it was resolved that application be made for a loan. Mr. Lawrence pointed out that these settlers showed that they were willing to help themselves, and he moved that the work be carried out under the supervision of the Board's foreman.—Seconded by Mr. Chard and carried.
