WELLINGTON" SESSIONS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Saturday. The prisoners found guilty at the Supreme Court sessions were sentenced this morning by the Chief Justice. Delia Pine, alias Booth, for theft of £ls, received two years' imprisonment. Baker, for stealing a sheep, 18 months' imprisonment. In the case of four wharf laborers, Hindie, Backhouse, Young and Olsen, foo theft or receiving tobacco, the Chief Justice said these offences were the more serious because prisoners held positions of trust. He fined each £5, to be paid in a month.
BICYCLE TYIIE THIEF FINED,
Wellington, Last Night. Edward Rosenberg, who stole 175 bicycle tyres, came up for sentence on Saturday. Counsel represented that accused was suffering from the effects of an injury to his head. The fact had been taken into consideration by the jury. I°. passing sentence, the Chief Justice said: "We are now recognising, and will in future recognise, that kindness must be introduced into our treatment of citizens who go astray. This is the origin of what is called 'prison reform.' W» ' nr *'t do what we can to make strong' the weak in mind and in conduct. There is no doubt as to the danger of leaving those with criminal instincts to believe that crime is> a small matter, and that they may commit wrong with impunity. That danger has to be guarded against. It may help those with weakened wills to act right if they are made to feel that for every wrong the 'pay day', as Emerson called it, comes round."
