LITHGOW IRON WORKS.
PAYMENT OF BONUS. By Cable—Pre#® Association—Copyright Melbourne, November 18. Mr. Paul's report on the iron bounty paid to Hoskins lias been laid on thetable in the House of Representatives. It alleges that the bounty was overpaid by £10,250, and states that the Customs authorities adopted generally loose methods, and failed properly to guard against irregularity. The Act stated that the bounty would be paid on' pig iron made of Australian ore, whereas ?0,000 tons of slag had been used. Mr. Paul failed to see how mill cinders could be classed as Australian ore. The Comptroller-General of Customs considers that Mr. Paul's figures are probably in excess of the amount overpaid, but thinks investigation necessary.
