At about eleven o'clock to-night a fire broke out in one of the largest business blocks in the city, bounded by Victoria, Queen, Elliot and- Darby streets. The flames had a good hold when discovered, and there is a possibility of the whole block going. The llames are burning furiously, and enormous damage is certain. Apparently the outbreak started in Messrs. Macky, Logan and Caldwell's soft goods warehouse, just below the Royal Hotel, which is in another block. The largest buildings in the block are Messrs. Macky and Logan's premises and the City Chambers. . The business places include those of— W. Holdsworth, bootmaker. Howey Walker, dentist. F. and W. Fowler, importers. Woodward, tobacconist. London and Berlin Piano Company. Selfs, tailors. S. Stone, bootmaker. ; Singer Sewing Machine Company. Hill and Plummer, paperhangcrs.

John Todd, tailor. As far as can be. ascertained, a good deal of the block belongs to Messrs Macky and Logan, whose warehouse is now completely gutted. Auckland, 12.20 a.m. , The flames are now apparently burning less furiously than before, and may be got under before the whole block goes. Later. The (ire is now under control, and the flames arc confined to Messrs. Macky, Logan and Caldwell's soft goods warehouse, which is completely gutted. The firm was carrying the new season's soft goods. The loss of the building am) .stock is estimated at £150,000. The building and stock are well insured in various New Zealand offices. The brigade put up a great fight.
