DISTRICT NEWS

MAKETAWA. (From Our Own Correspondent) We are experiencing very dirty weather just now. Strong, cold, westerly and nor'-westerly winds, with occasional hard showers and thick fog, and at times hail, make things very uncomfortable for those interested in dairying, besides delaying cropping operations for winter feed. I understand a movement is on foot to obtain telephonic communication for the Dudley and Durham roods, and such should be of immense benefit to the settlers concerned The idea as mentioned « to get the wires to Dudley road from Inglewood and connect the Durham road with a wire along the unopened Bedford road, and it is to be hoped the initial cost will not act as a deterrent. Once put up the farmers will find the convenience of great benefit, and it is hoped the Department will be enabled to meet the settlers.

Matters political are slowly but surely coming to the interesting point, and barrackeis are in the stage of sharpening up for a real go in, and probably something worth recording may eventuate within a few days. Mr. Hine and a party of friends motored up Durham road during the week to engage the school for a political address on the 88th inst.

Mr. H. Yeates, of the Lower Durham road, met with a nasty accident on Wednesday last, being thrown out of his gig while turning the corner to' cross tfie railway lino. Mr. Yeates, who was discovered lying on the road amongst some remains of the gig by Mr. Barlow, was put into a passing ] motor and taken home, where it was found that though no bones were broken the sufferer had received severe bruises and a bad shaking. { The monthly meeting of the Durham ] Schqol Committee was held on Monday j evening last, all members being present. Wie teacher waited on the Committee and pointed out the hardship likely to be done to teachers whose homes were in the other Island by the schools not being closed in time to enable them to reach their homes for Christmas, and itjhe Committee decided to close the school one day earlier. The matter of shifting the ont-offices, which had been held in abeyance on account of the difficulty of obtaining labor, was discussed, the chairman stating that he had succeeded in getting a man.to do the work. The secretary will write the Board anent the matter. The Committee decided to approach the Board regarding the concreting of the space between the shelter-shed and the school, and asking for assistance regarding same. The wear: and tear caused by the children running around the school is causing the earth to shrink away from the piles, and a serious state of affairs will eventuate u something is not done. A set of swings and Roman rings lias been erected for the scholars' amusement, and is a substantially-built affair, which the children seem to thoroughly appreciate. The school will be closed on the second dav of the Stratford Show to enable scholars to have a try at the competitive essav.
