A design for a novel vessel, which is practically a motor car designed either to float or run on the bottom of the sea, is at present attracting the attention o£ those interested in salvage operations and pearl fisheries. The invention is the work of a Mr E. H. Crossiev. The jjlans show a steel barrel loft long by Oft in diameter, fitted with wheels which will enable it to 'be driven along the floor of the sea, ami a propeller which will drive, it through the water. It has portholes that will enaible the men inside to see in e-rery direction , and a double bottom, which, when: the crew wish to sink the vessel, they can fill with sea 'water bv means of a- hand pump. The strangest features of the craft are several steel rods with ends shaped something like hitman hands, which are worked from, within the barrel, so that they can be turned at various angles and pick up anything from the bottom of the sea. Other rods are fitted with drills designed to bore through rock or armor. Another feature of the invention is an air lock through which, I necessary, a dive? equipped with the ordinary dress can step out on to a meek. Answering a question at Opunake, Mr Mackenzie said that personally he believed Mr Fowtds left the Cabinet because he got tired of the work. It is estimated that thefts of articles to the value of more than 300,000d01s have ibeen recorded in New York this summer. The police lists show an unusual number of watches and diamond* stolen, of which few uro 'ever recovered*
