PERSONAL.

Mr. and Mrs. D. S. Wylie and Mr. J. H. Parker returned by the Rarawa last night from Auckland. An Adelaide cablegram reports that Lord and Lady Chelmsford have returned from their visit to England. A Nelson message states that the Governor and suite will visit Nelson on November 20, via Blenheim. His Excellency specially desires to inspect the Motueka fruit farms. Mr. Wm. Wastney, formerly chairman of the Waimea County Council, died at Nelson on Sunday at the age of SO. Ho was imjeh esteemed, and was the brother-in-law- of Mr. McMahon, the Government candidate for Nelson, Mr. Wastney had numerous relatives in the district.—Press Association. Judge R. N. Jones has been appointed President .of the Tairawhiti Maori Land Board, in succession to Mr. Keefer, who recently resigned on account of what he regarded as Departmental interference. The new president will continue to exercise his function.-: as a Native Land Court Judge in the same district. The Department view is that it is rather an advantage than otherwise to have the two offices' combined in one person. Word has been received by private letter that Bishop Wallis, who was seriously ill for some weeks at Marienbad, whither lie had been sent for treatment, had sufficiently recovered to return to England with Mrs. Wallis in the middle of September. He was very much better when the letter was written. Both lie and-Mrs. WallU were staying with Colonel and Mrs. Williams, at Bridchead, where the Bishop was enjoying the complete rest that English doctors had prescribed. They were looking forward to going to stay near Rochester, if the Bishop's health continued to improve probably to January or so—and then going to their own house at Devizes.
