One witness declared that he was burnt out and compelled to take s the first house available. Seeing his predicament, the landlord raised the 1 rent from nine to fifteen shillings, and 1 the tenant effected repairs at his own expense. The rent was then raised lo seventeen shillings. The house was not " worth more than £1.30. Other witnesses stated it was impossible to get a house at a fair rental.
