THE AWARUA SEAT. By Telegraph—Press Association. InvercargiU, Laat Nigit. Considerable political significance has been attached by some people to the Southland County Council's election fox tlw Winton riding, in view of the fact that Mr. Moore, one of the candidates,, who was for a longtime .Mayor of Wirrtoii,, a» well as a well-known liovcrmnent stipporttr. and Mr. Hamilton, the other candidate, is the Opjiosition candidate for Awanui against Sir Joseph Ward. The result of the county election just announced was-: Hamilton 505, Moore 363. THE PALMERSTON SEAT. Palmerston North, Last Night. He favored the reform of the Legislative Council, but was opposed to the Opposition scheme of large electorates, which would unduly favor wealthy candidates, which was doubtless the Opposition's object. He thought a revising chamber, composed of barristers and solicitors, with other necessary qualification?, would meet the case. Eight or ten such men would be sufficient.
The Stratford Post is angry with the Squatters' paper in Wellington. It says: "For barefaced distortion of facts and utter unscrupulous .effrontery no newspaper in New Zealand can quite equal Wellington's Dominion. It is one of the most shocking examples of Party feeling run mad. Its every issue contains a, wildly hysterical tirade against the Government, and it is quite oblivious to any sense of fair play. Sometimes it is even amusing in its foolishness and conceit,•? and sometimes it is nauseating to a Ae< gree. It is -.-amusing, but veryi , for ireat- thfe truth, when in a further-, adulatory Article of Mr. J, B. Hine, \f assert* that the Stratford Post is "und'ei the'spell'' of Mr. McClugggge. That/fe. deliberately untrue, and the Dominjjpn knows it full well. That paper, howeyer, bound hand and foot as it is, k Wgry because the Stratford Post l»sition organ any more than it is a Government organ. The Stratford Post is independent in its polities—and the; Wellington paper alluded "to does not know what independence means. It simply crawls on its belly to Party and its sycophantic anxiety to please is'lprobnbly doing that party more harm than good. Some of our friends, who are sfrong party men, might possibly be misled by such 'wilfully mendacious statements ti& that made by the Dominion, but if they will look the matter squarely in the face they will admit that political independence does not mean supporting the side to which they happen to belong.'"
