' "With reference to a statement reflecting upon the integrity of Sir Joseph Ward and appearing in the report of Mr. Monckton's speech at Otaki and published mi the issue of the Otaki Mail of the 25th October last, I desire to express my sincere regret for having allowed the < same to appear in my paper.
