PEDIGREE JERSEY CATTLE
For many years past land throughout 1 the Dominion has been steadily advancing in value, until now, in Southern Ttiranoki, the greatest dairying district in the Dominion, the best land cannot be' obtained at anything under £OO per, acre. This lias caused the farmens to' realise that, to make the property payj by dairying, the old crossbred cows would: have to go. They have, therefore, gone) in largely for pedigree animals, the favorite breed being the Jersey. So keen has the demand for this class l>ccome that, although some 90 animals from outside the province were offered by auction diuring last year, farmers were unable to get sufficient to till the deficiency inj their herds. In May last, at both Mr.: C. Day's sale at Tamahere and Mr. E. D. ] McLennan's sale at Papakura, where a' large number of Jerseys were offered,' the whole lot, with the exception of oneor two animals, was purchased by Turanaki farmers. This keen demand necessarily forced up the price of this breed, and at Mr. C. Clarke's dispersal s<ile at, Bell Block in June last phisnomenal prices were realised. To improve the breed some splendid animals have been imported l , particularly noticeable amongst these being the now famous bull "Campanile's Sultan," imported by Messrs. Griffiths and Cornwall, and now owned by Mir. C. Clarke, of Auckland. This bull was much sought after, and at Mr. Clarke's sale miet with the keenest coinpetition yet offered for cattle in the Dominion, but his owner would not part with him. The New Zealand Government, always willing to assist the farmers in improving their beasts, has purchased 6omc very fine animals for the State farms, and has now secured the best of '"Campanile's Sultan's" progeny, namely, ''Grannie's Campanile's Sultan." , This young bull Was bred iby Mr. Thos. Luxton, of Waita.ni, from the greatest milking and butter-fat cow yet heard of in the Dominion, namely, "Grannie's Girl," and is by "Campanile's Sultan." In 1907-8 his dam guve 7911bs of commercial butter in 305 days, and this record will be hard to beat. This season the demand is just as keen and at recent sales good prices have been realised. 1 Farmers who hare not yet awakened to the fact that only the best bred animals psii)', will do well to realise this and to secure pedigree cattle before all the best are taken up.
At the sale which Mr. Newton King is holding at Waiwukaiho on Friday next some really first-class auiinals will be offered. On looking through the catalogue one finds some splendid beasts with fine milking strains in tlu;ir blood, and some of them are amongst the best show stock in the Dominion. One has only to look at the pedigrees of such bulls as "Liryclear Lad," "Stevenson," and ''Marie's Eminent," and of the cows "White Rosette," Magnet's Vixen," and "Mayflower CXX," to see that some of the choicast animals can still be secured. Catalogues for this sale will be forwarded on application to the auctioneer.
