WAITARA NEWS
BOROUGH COUNCIL, (From Our Own Correspondent.) The usual monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Wednesday evening, there being present His Worship the Mayor. Crs. Bird]big, Brabant, Langman. Rattenbury, Tate, Klenner and Black.
Cr. Brabant reported that the owner of the fenee encroaching on Cracroft street hail not had the fence removed. — Final notice to be given to owner. Cr. Rattenbury reported that the Works Committee had decided to put metal on Nelson street, the owner agreeing to subsidise to the amount of £3 10s.
Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P., acknowledged the vote of thanks passed for his services in regard to the bridge, and, in reply to a resolution of the Council asking for a subsidy towards a memorial in the soldiers' cemetery, said he would use his best efforts to obtain such, as it Mas quite \ime something was done in the matter.
The mutter of rubbish pit was left in the hands of the Works Committee for attention.
The engineer's, overseer's and foreman's reports were read. A circular was received from the Stratford Chamber of Commerce asking if Waitara favored a universal Saturday half-holiday.—The Chamber is to be informed that Waitara is quite in accord with such a movement.
Mr. It. Tate applied to hire the grader for work in Waitara West.—The request was agreed to.
Cr. Brabant introduced a deputation from the Tennis Club with a request that the water service be carried to the courts.—On the motion of Crs. Birdling and Rattenbury, the request was acceded to.
Mr. Carriek wrote again complaining of the blackberry from one of the Council's reserves—lt was resolved to cancel liis tenancy of the reserve as from November 30.
Mr. Spence's aeqount was again before the Council, and it was re.solved to make no advance on the payment offered. Matthews Bros, wrote calling attention to the bad state of the road to the Recreation fi round.—On the motion of Crs. Tate, and Birdling the matter was referred to the Works Committee to confer with the engineer. C'r. Rattenbury moved, and Cr. Black seconded, that the matter of drainage be referred to the Mayor and Works Committee, with the engineer, to map out a district and submit a report and estimate at next meeting. The former committee was set up to draw up a rough plan of hall and arrange for calling competitive designs. It was resolved to call for tenders for tenders for watering the streets, the Council to find the water-cart. On the recommendation of the Cemetery Committee, it was decided to erect an iron gate at the cemetery. The order for water troughs not having been fulfilled, it was decided to countermand it and erect concrete ones. Cr. Tate reported that the Taranaki County Council's road roller was available, and it was resolved to hire it. •Accounts amounting to £412 4s lOd were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned.
