SYDNEY WHARF STRIKE.
IMPOTENCE OF THE GOVERNMENT. A MINISTER DISAPPOINTED. By Calle—Press Association—Copyright Sydney, October 31. Business people express great dissatisfaction at the apparent inability of the Government to cope with the situation resulting from the strike. They declare that the Arbitration Act is a dead letter.
Mr. Carmiehael is disappointed at the non-acceptance of his offer to do stevedoring. He states that it was understood that the parties who waited oi> the Government were anxious to prevent loss to the producers and the country, lis was apparently mistaken.
ANOTHER BOAT LAID UP. Received 31, 9.15 p.M. Sydney, October 31. As a result of the strike the steamer Cycle is laid up, and the crew of thirty has been paid off. ANOTHER DISCUSSION. CLERK LUMPERS DO GOOD 'WORK. Received I, 12.15 a.m. Sydney, October 31. Mr. Carmiehael has withdrawn his stevedoring proposal. A special meeting of wharf laborers to-morrow night will discuss the advice given by the Melbourne conference to resume work.
The crews of the steamer Moruya and Period have been paid off, and permanent hands and clerks are doing good work shifting cargo. Some vessels, after discharging, received quantities of general loading as well as perishables. PROTEST FROM UNION OFFICIAL. Melbourne, October 31. At the Trades Hal) the council tocussed a letter from Mr. Morris, secretary to the Waterside Workers' Federation, requesting its support in an endeavor to persuade the men to return to work. It states that an agreement, honorably entered into, was broken without provocation or notice. The discussion wa's adjourned. The wharf laborers condemn the action of the strikers.
