A New York cablegram reports that Air. Joseph Pulitzer, proprietor of the New York World, has died aboard his yacht.

ihe Rev. Jus. B. Smellie, Presbyterian minister at Papakura, and formerly of Rangiora, Wyndliam and Reefton, died at Rptorua yesterday.—Press wire.
Mr. R. L. M. Kitto, manager of the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Company's branch at Hawera, will succeed Mr D. A. Baxter in the managership af the company's Napier office.
Mr. Moyle, whose funeral takes place to-day, was a son of one of the eflrliest New Zealand settlers, an d himself am old identity who fought gallantly in the Maori wars and possessed the medal. It is hoped that the Veterans' Association, with which he has not of late been associated, will muster a strong party out of respect to the memory of their old comrade.
News was received in Wellington on Monday by cable from London announcing the death of Mrs. Charles Watte, wfflow of the late Mr. Charles Watts, ~jun., station •• owner, of Landsdowne Marlborough. The deceased was well known throughout New Zealand. Her three sons are in England—the eldest in the Army, another studying medicine, and the youngest (aged fifteen) is at school. She has relatives residing in Nelson.

Mr. A. L. C'happell, on severing hia connect,™ with the Taranaki HeraW ,°nMonday, was made the recipient ofa and a case of pipes by the staff of the paper, prio r to hk parture for Auckland. In makin* the ' presentation, the editor referred to Mr. Chappell s energetic handling of his department, and wished him success in his new venture. .Mr. Chappell suitably responded, expressing his regret at leaving so many friends behind him. On Monday evemng Mr. Chappell was entertained bv - members of the Carrington Road Cricket Uub, and presented with a souvenir of their esteem and appreciation to help cricket in North Tarauaki. Mr. M. G. Williams takes Mr. Chappell's place oil the staff of the Herald.
