THE RAILWAY SERVICE.

REPORT OF COMMITTEE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Yesterday. The report by the Railway Committee, presented to the House this morning, on the grievances of the first division of the railway service recommends that positions reduced in status during the last few years, as set out in clause 6 of the petition, should be restored where the traffic is maintained; that in connection with promotions, regulation 40 be crossed out, and when an officer is not recommended for promotion he be immediately supplied with a copy of the report giving reasons; that the headjustment of classification is desirable, and that the Government be recommended to go into the whole question regarding the first division, with a view to more adequately remunerating officers generally, striking a ninth grade and fixing a maximum of £220 for officers who fail to qualify for promotion; that the regulations re leave of absence be brought into conformity with those of other branches of the' public service; that the staffing of stations be reviewed view a view to reducing excessive hours where they exist; that regulation 47 be altered to allow three days at the commencement of a journey'and ten after arrival, where officers are transferred to meet the exigencies of the department; that evidence 'before the committee does not justify it in recommending the abolition of the Minister's veto on appeal board decisions. Regarding the petition of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, the committee recommends that the Government set up a board or commission to enquire into the second division's petition, with a view to recommending the best methods of removing any grievances or anomalies that may exist. Christcliurch, Last Night. Mr M. Denuehy, of the New Zealand Railway Officers' Institute, telegraphed on Saturday as follows to Mr. Witty, M.P., a member of the Railways Committee of. the House, regarding the committee's report on the institute's petition: "Very pleased with report. It is evident the. matter has been given careful consideration. Many thanks and beat wishes." ,
