For Liverpool plains the voting was:— Ashford (Labor) 3087. Perry (Liberal 3302. A few small returns are to come, but they cannot alter the result. This leaves the party strength:—Labor 4<i, Liberal 44. Mr. Willis being Speaker, reduces the Liberals' vote by 1. OLD AGE PENSIONS. Melbourne. October 28. Mr. Fisher, in bis Budget speech, said the large increase in the number of old age pensioners was due to the disappearance of the feeling that pensions were paid as a matter of charity. That no principle of this sort was underlying the payment was now better understood, and the reluctance to apply was vanishing. He expected that the current year's payments would total £2.190,000. A special allowance would be made to the blind.
