Tn connection with the claims of the Seamen's Union, giving evidence before the Arbitration Court, the secretary of the Commonwealth Steamship Association stated that the owners paid £175,000 annually in wages. If the increase of wages and remodelling of the hours asked for were conceded it would mea« an extra expenditure of £57,532. A BARMAIDS' PROTEST. Brisbane, October 20. A deputation of barmaids protested that the proposed Liquor Bill, dealing with their hours of labor, would drive them out of the calling. The changes were only wanted by a few temperance fanatics and incompetent barmen. Mr. Denhani prom"-,ed consideration of the protest.
