EDUCATION BOARD

j MOXTHLV MEETING. The Board continued its meeting ye«- , terday, nil the members being present ' but Mr. Cargill. The matter of appointing a clerk of works in connection with the re-erection of the Stratford school was brought up by a letter from the Stratford Committee, asking that the appointment be made. The matter was discussed with Mr. Sanderson, one of the Board's architects, who said lie intended visiting the work once a fortnight. Arrangements were made for more frequent visits, and the Board decided to do without a clerk of works. The Waitara. Committee wrote with reference to the replacing of the fences of the school grounds.—The Board saw no reason to depart from its usual procedure of supplying the material and leaving the committee to pay for the labor required. It was decided to apply to the Department for a movable school on the Ihaia road.

Requests from committees for repairs, etc., were dealt with, and the following decisions were come to: No necessity for additional tanks at Iluiakama residence; new piunp authorised for Okato school; Te Kui Committee's letter ra grounds referred to the inspeetor for a report; Warea Committee to be asked for further particulars of work of cutting down trees, fencing and improvement of the grounds, for which a £ for £ subsidy is asked; the chairman was given power to act regarding the request of the West End Committee for the location of the bouadary pegs of the school grounds, so that fences may be erected on the proper lines; the Hillsborough Committee asked for alterations in window's of the school, and the matter was left to the chairman, with pow«r to act. A grant of £1 was made to the Douglas Committee for a bookcase for the school library. Fencing material will be supplied to the Okau Committee, provided they pay for labor required. Huiroa Committee applied for, and were granted, £5 for the improvement of the school grounds. A meeting of householders will be held at Uruti on Tuesday, November li, for the purpose of defining the boundaries of Musker's, Mt. Messenger and Uruti school districts, and to elect committees. Mr. Haleombe will represent the Board at the meeting. Mr. Charles llusker, Uruti, asked the Board to take over the school established by him on his property. He offered to exchange this site for the surveyed school reserve, now leased to Mr. Guseott, and of no uso as a school site. Mr. Musker waited on the Board. It was decided to refer the matter to the Chief Inspeetor for enquiry and report. The secretary of the Rftliotu School Committee forwarded the resignation of the committee as a protest against the action of the Board in appointing a female teacher to the school when the committee was desirous of having a male teacher appointed. The committee's wishes had been communicated to the Board, but evidently had not been considered. Mr. loung was asked to recommend two householders to act as commissioners. Miss Lewis, sole teacher of the Dudley School, and Miss Pearee, assistant at aitara, were granted sick leave. The action of the Okoke nnd Mangaeliu committees in closing their schools on account of an epidemic of measles in their district was confirmed. The Board confirmed the following appointments to school committees: Warea. Messrs. C. Parker and J. E. Julian, in place of Messrs. T. R." Julian, and J. Ilatpin, resigned; Ruapuha, Mr. C. Cond. vice Mr. A. Campbell, resigned; Norfolk, ilr. Thos. King, vice Mr: 11. Trimble, resigned.

Mcssr>. Fi>clicr and Wildon, Wlinngamomona. wrote with reference to" a lease of section i), block 12, Upper Waitara. A seven years' improvement lease would jiot.be satisfactory, on account of tin; cost of felling, grassing and fencing.—They will be offered a ten years' lease on the usual improvement conditions. A letter was read from Mr. Pontelow, 'Kma road, in reference to -tlie refusal' of the teacher at Oaonui to grant his daughter half an hour's exemption first tiling 011 Monday mornings in order to allow lier take' her music lessons.—Several member's thought that thn concession might be granted if it did not interfere with the. working of the school and if it were not possible to make arrangements by which the nmsie-lesson could be taken at a time which would not clash with school hours.—Left in the hands (if the committee.
