Karl drey. in re-ponding, said that, with the exception of an occasional crank, it was impossible to find an annexationist throughout Canada, which was destined to become the strongest part of the Empire before the close of the present century. The Laurier policy was to find an extended market in
America, and was in no sen>e a policy of disloyalty to closer connection with the Mother Land. People who scented a possible danger to their independence outvoted the policy, which was. however. advantageous to their material interests. Xo fact was so clear as the determination of Canada to work out her salvation under the Union Jack. Continuing. Karl flrcv said it was the magnetic clutch of a common ideal, with like interests and aspirations, that kept the Empire indivisable. but the interests of the Knipire would need before long some form of organic union to prevent the magnetic dutch weakening. He urged the bringing of the overseas dominions clo-cr by cheapened transportation ami lower cable rates.
