BRITISH RAILWAYS.
THE COMMISSION'S REPORT. DISAPPOINTMENT OF THE MEN. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. London, October 23. The Sheffield and Bradford members of tlie Amalgamated Railwayman passed a resolution repudiating the report of the Royal Commission. The Doncaster men resolved to ask the joint committee to demand an eight hours day, a minimum wage of thirty shillings weekly, and unqualified recognition of the unions; failing compliance within a fortnight, that there be a general strike. Mr. Barnes, M.P., says that the commission's method of adjusting the railway trouble was an improvement on the agreement arranged by Mr. LloydGeorge in 1907. Mr. Williams, M.P., says that if the railwaymen continue working under present conditions until next July it will be an absolute disgrace, condemning a hundred thousand to work for less than £1 per week. Mr. Appleton said ho appreciated the disappointment of the men, and trusted that for the time being they would swallow their resentment and honorably carry out the undertaking, grimly determining to sweep away the decision at the proper time, The executive of the Amalgamated Society of Rail ..ay Servants will meet at London on the 30th to consider the
commission's report. The Liverpool branch recommends a twenty-four hours ultimatum. MEN NOT BOUND BY FINDINGS. KIER HARDTE ADVISES A STRIKE. Received 24, 10 p.m. London, October 24. This men's leaders declare that they had never bound themselves to accept the commissioners' findings. Mr, Henderson, M.P., interviewed, said it was untrue that the Commission had not conceded recognition, also that nothing could be done before the termination of the existing agreements. The commissioners recommended the election of new hoards as early as possible. Mr. Kier Hnrdie, speaking at Keighley, said if a fair minimum wage and recognition were refused, railwaymen had no option but to strike.
