A PECULIAR ACCIDENT.
CHILD'S LIFE PRQVIDENTT \LLY RAVED. Auckland, October 23. A peculiar accident, which nearly resulted in the death of a child, occurred shortly after noon yesterday, near the new Trade's Hall, which is in course of erection in Upper Hobson street. A gentleman, who was on his wayhome from church, noticed a piece *f timber lying on the footpath near the building, and,-Kitted it out of the way towards the fence. Looking over the latter he saw a jfurjjc tub of water, such as is used by plasterers, with the legs of a child sticking out of it, Going closer, he found that the child was submerged to the knees, and that a section of an "I" beam or girder, some eighteen inches long, was lying across the tuh, pinning the child down. He lifted the, girder away with some difficulty, and. tmpd the .child out. ... It.proved to be a girl some three years of "age. She was black in the face, but after a minute'or two the little one came round, and was han'ded over to its mother, who had been summoned by another ehild. (Apparently the two children, who live quite close to ithe hall, were playing around the building, when one fell into the tub, pulling over the girder, which must have .been leaning on the edge. But for the passer-by happening to lookover the fence, resistance would have arrived too late to save the child from drowning.
