WHERE IS "NED" SKIPPER?
] -MAX AND A CUN MISSING. I What was treated as a joke against (lie police a few week-; ago is iww be-j coming (piite a serious matter. "Ned" I Skipper was one of tlie men wlio were surprised by the puliee tlie other Sun-, day enjoying a glass of grog in a hotel, ajul he was to be summoned as a witness aff.iiiist tlie hotelkeeper and also to answer ;v charge of being illegally on licensed premises. But no police' con»table was able to '-serve" the document on him, for Skipper, who is a Maori. .kept out of sight. He was believed to Ibe worrying a bit about the business, although Constable Boulton is of opinion [ that he wasn't much concerned about it. ! Anyhow, Skipper is still away, although with the assistance of another Maori the native settlements in the province have been searched, as have been all places where it was reasonably supposed the man might be. Xow it transpires that Skipper borrowed a. gun before he was lost to view. Senior-Sergeant Dart has learned that on the Oth or 10th inst. the man went to Mr. Arthur Locke, on Dorset road, and asked for the loan of a f;un to shoot birds with, and it was arranged that the gun should be left in the trapped so that Skipper could take it when he liked. The Maori said ha had his own ammunition. Tlie gun has since been moved from the shed, and has not been returned.
The man was last seen shortly after midnight on Thursday, 12th inst.. at a native dance at Fitzroy. and a search in the Smart road district on Sunday by the police failed to discover any trace of him. lie is well known, of course, a stout Maori, about ."ill Tin in height, with a moustache tinged with grey.
