Trains from north and south emptied their thousands at the course, and motor-cars were in great evidence. The weather was boisterous and there was a suggestion of rain in the air. but fortunately the moisture kept off, and the gathering was a great success viewed from all points. The principal races fell to favorites, Labor Day scoring a popular win in the Cup in slow time. Midian won the Momohaki Stakes very comfortably. The Waverley-trained Koran made a runaway race of the Hurdles, but the other events provided close and exciting sport. Mr. R. Skipworth was in good form at the barrier, only one indifferent start marring his efforts. The course and lawns were looking their best, and the secretary, Mr. W. Macfarfane, had everything well in hand. The Waverley Brass Band supplied the music. Following are details of the racing:— MORTON MEMORIAL MAIDEX, of 70 sovs; second 10 sovs from the stakes. From a good send-off Kjaran [immediately went to the front and led Mahuta and a hunched crtwd past 'the stand. When the field came into view Taft was wdl clear of the crowd, and the bay son of Freedom was still holding his own when the distance was rebelled. Here Clemoes challenged and Wild Lupin came with a gTeat run on the outside. Wild Lupin won on the post by nearly half a length, and Clemoes just" beat Taft for second place. The start was a poor one, Longuard lost ground and Clemency many lengths. Crown Pearl hopped out quickest, but was steadied and Topic ran into the lead. She latter was well clear rounding the bottom, with Plantation and Minora closing up. Once, straightened up, for the run home Crown Pearl put in- temg strides and dashed past Topic. Minora came fast on the outside, but had no chance with Crown Pearl, who went on and won by about a length and a half. Sam Pan was a fair third, and Clemency ran in the rear all the way. Ambergris ran to the front along the back and was leading Sandy Paul and Midian at the six furlong post. Midian headed Sandy Paul along the bottom and was in front at the home turn. Sandy Paul put in a good run in the straight, but had no hope of catching Midian, who landed the race very comfortably by a couple of lengths. Ambergris was a close third. She won the Taranaki Cup on two occasions. At 3yrs old she won that event under Bst, and when a year older scored under flst 111b.
