•CAPABLE OF SETTLEMENT." By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Sydney, October 23. All the inter-State vessels sailed on Saturday without Sydney eargo. Melbourne, October '23. The Council of the Waterside Workers' Federation met to consider the action of the Sydney wharf laborers. Mr. Hughes, Attorney-General, president, after the meeting, said that certain action had been decided upon. He thought the dispute capable of settle ment. CARGO OF ORE UNTOUCHED. PERISHABLES HANDLED. Received 23, 9.20 p.m. Sydney, October 23. The steamer Cycle has arrived from Port Pirie with a eargo of ore for transhipment. The recognised rates for ore arc Is 6d per ton. hut the wharf laborers declined to handle it. The union officials express astonishment at this action. In other directions the strike is unaltered. The seamen, acting on the advice of the Melbourne executive, continue to handle perishables. Therefore the dairy produce markets are unaffected. The produce trade from Melbourne and Tasmania, however, is still at a standstill, affecting the potato and chaff markets.

DEPUTATION TO MINISTERS. CONFERENCE TO BE ARRANGED. Received 23. 1 a.m. Sydney. October 23. A deputation of merchants and coastal steamship owners waited on Messrs. Mc Gowen and Carmichael, urging them to exercise their personal influence to get a settlement of the strike. A similar deputation waited on Mr. Carmichael on Saturday, and promised to produce certain information. Mr. Carmichael to-day expressed surprise that the deputationistg were in such a hurry to bring the matter before the Premier. He thought, before they tried to impress the urgency of the case they might fulfil their promise to produce information. He declared they wished to advertise themselves as friendly to the farmers. Mr. McGowen said that if it was at all possible to arrange a conference of parties he would do so.

A COMPULSORY CONFERENCE. Received 24, 12.40 a.m. Melbourne, October 23. A compulsory conference under Mr. Justice Higgins met for half an hour. At the conclusion the Registrar reported that it was without result, and was adjourned till to-morrow.
