TWO TRAGEDIIS. Tragedies are unhappily common enough, and every newspaper reader becomes habituated to narratives of dreadful happening hy tire and flood without feeling imifch emotion. It is, however, when dread happenings occur dose to home, so to speak, that they inspire us with sorrow and emphasise the dangers that surround us daily. The details of the dreadful Foxton fatality which wc piiblMi this morning are painfully explicit, showing how a pleasure, party during a particularly short trip in a small hoat met a dreadful doom.! ■ IS there is any lesson in such a happening it >eems to he that people, are ittoo willing to trust their lives- to frail crafts. It is peculiarly moving that in so many *ucli eases the victims are on plen>nre bent, and under such circumstances the grief of the relatives 'of i must be peculiarly poignant, coming more horrible in discoveries can lie imagined than that of Mr. (irove, who in recovering the body of a lady whom he supposed to ,be a stranger, found it to br his wife. Such an event must permanently sadden many homes, An accident nf a different kind was that '-hy which four men were drowned oil' Cape Turnagain while carrying wool in a surf boat. This particular accident, which -wept these strong, healthy lives away in a few minutes, shows tliat man's life may often depend on the efficiency of si machine. An engine stopped, the boat turned broadside to the waves, and the men were drowned in sight of impotent spectators ]f there be nny grain of comfort in such a happening it is that none of the unfortunate workers were married men. Both oases arc peculiarly sad, and, in particular, the Foxton fafalily has points about it that must move to deepest pity anyone who reads the story of the accident.
