Several members of Parliament arc still absent owing to illness. Messrs. Buick and Mander are both steadily improving in health. Hon. Thos. Mackenzie, however, is still confined to his bed, and has made little progress—Dominion. Mr. Laehlan Langlands died suddenly on Friday morning at his residence at St. Clair. Dunedin. Mr. Unglands was born at Campbelltown, Argyllshire, on •Inly 7. 1830, the son of Captain Roger Langlands. of the Royal Xavy. He came to Otago liy the .ship Victory, arriviii" in 1848.
It is officially announced, says a London cablegram, that Sir G. Askwith has been appointed Chief Industrial Commissioner; Mr. George S. Barnes succeeds Bir G. Askwith as comptroller of the labor ami statistical departments of the Board of Trade; Mr. Robert S. Maxwell succeeds Mr. Haines as comptroller of the companies department of the Board of Trade.
A Greymouth telegram reports that Geraldo I'erotti, Italian Consul there, died at the age of 81. He was the first settler in Greymouth. He was an industrious miner, and acquired much property. He leaves a widow and two who are at present touring in England, and two sons, one in Greymouth and one at Keefton. The brain of the late Mr. Perotti was active till the last. Mr. F. La wry, wiio lias announced his intention of retiring from political life, has received the following letter from the members of the Agricultural Committee of the House of Representatives: 1- Dar Mr. Lawry,—We. the undersigned members of the Agricultural, Pastoral, Stock and Commerce Committee, desire* on your retirement from elective Parliamentary life in this Dominion, to convey to you our high appreciation of your administration of tin; all'airs of the'eommit(ee for twenty-one sessions. The records will show that during that lengthy period your ruling on contentious questions lias never been disputed. You have, by tact, courtesy and firmness, and by the methods adopted, been instrumental in facilitating business, without stilling discussion or impairing efficiency in dealing with the public matters the committee has had to undertake. We wish to place this, our opinion, on record, as a welldeserved tribute to our chairman."
