DISTRICT NEWS.

KG'UONT VILLAGE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The cheques on the. 2.Hh were not so big as could have been desired, but Mangorei suppliers were by no means alone in this respect. Mrs. Magec.a verv old resident, widow of the-late ,(. H. Magee. has left the Village to take up her residence in Picton.

A cricket match has been arranged between the local team and the Mangorei team, for Monday, Labor Day, but present weather conditions preclude all probability of a match.

A concert and dance in aid of the Cricket Chili funds was held in the Hall on Thursday night. Owing to the rough weather th-:: attendance was meagre, and the management had some thoughts of postponing the affair, but finally decided to continue the programme. Mr. A. Morton, patron of the club, occupied the chair. The first portion of the evening's entertainment con-i>ted of a miscellaneous programme of vocal and instrumental items. The local contributors were assisted by Mc-si's. I lyrics and Taylor, from Inglewood. Mr. Hynes sang "Some Day" and "The Link Divine." while Air. Taylor sang "Anchored" and recited a comic version of "The Boy Stood on the Burning Deck." All these items were well received, and the audience appreciated the <]iiality of the voices. It is to be h&r/M that the gentlemen who so kindly responded to the invitation given them will favor us with further visits, when they will doubtless be received by a much larger audience. Appended is the full programme:—Orchestral selection, Mr. 0. Marsh's orchestra: song. Mr. E, Bemvarden; pianoforte solo. Miss A. Smith: recitation, Mr. G. F. Dewhirst; song. Mr. Hynes; dance, "caehuca," Miss X. McKeth; song, Mr. Taylor; reading, Mr. A. Morton; song, Mr. E. Penwarden: recitation. Mr. Taylor; song, Mr. Ilyne-; pianoforte solo, Mrs. Matthews. The second portion of the programme consisted, of a nigger farce, entitled "Sprinks. the Baker.'' which was well received by the audience. Following is the cast:—Mr. AVoodard (a darkie gentleman), Mr. 0. F. Dewhirst: Mrs. Woodard (his wife), Mr. E. Dewhirst: Joe (their man servant!. Mr. P. G. Olson-, llanna (maid of all work), Mr. 0. IT. Marsh; Sprinks (the baker). Mr. B. G. Marsh. AH the parts were well taken, and the farce provided a pleasant change from the usual programme of concert items. After the concert the floor was cleared for dancing. Mr. A. Oliong acting as M.C., and Mr. Geo. Marsh's orchestra supplying excellent music. Supper was handed round during the evening. The affair, from nil aspects but the financial one, was a great success.
