PROFESSIONAL POLITICIANS
AN EX-GOVERNOR'S REMARKS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Received 22, 5.5 p.m. London, October 21. Lord Dudley, speaking at Worcester, said it was dangerous for the country if the House of Commons possessed professional politicians. There was some likelihood of this unless the electors were careful. The people of the colonies were more engaged in money-making than in England, hence Australians made a greater number of professional politicians, which was hardly good for the Commonwealth. While England might follow the energetic colonies in many things, he hoped it would never do so in this respect. Some very democratic States had a body of politicians existing solely on their Parliamentary stipends.
The Westminster Gazette says that if Lord Dudley had given utterance to snch opinions in Australia his governorship would have been brief.
