BROOKLANDS GARDEN PARTY
The weather yesterday was distinctly unkind to the Society for the Health of Women and Children, under whose auspices a garden party wa's held at "Brooklands," the function having been postponed on account of the unpleasant weather on Thursday. Spells of sunshine that bade the promoters hope were followed by cold showers which speedily quenched the enthusiasm, and unfortunately more of the public were influenced by the showers than by the sunshine. So the attendance suffered, and so did the exhibits of Homily decorated carts and other light vehicles. But there was still left all the spring beauty of Mr. Newton King's grounds, the extent of which was a revelation to many of the visitors, whilst all were surprised at the wealth of blooms in the beds and borders. The whole place was in perfect order, and the ideal of a place for a garden party. There was afternoon tea in the shade of the trees,' and a sweets stall appeared to do good business. Croquet provided amusement for a number of the ladies. The prizes in the decorative classes were won as follow: Decorated go-carts: Miss Hamerton 1, Mrs. Freethy 2. Decorated dolls' pram—Betty Ward 1, Christine Wylie 2. Decorated doll's cart, children's class: Myrtle Walker 1. Decorated hoops: Lucy Haworth 1, Mack Robertson 2, Vivian Law 3, Elwood Ha.worth 4.
