SYDNEY WHARF STRIKE.
NUMBER OF VESSELS TIED UP. By Cable —Press Association—Copyright Sydney, October 20. The crews and permanent hands removed the perishable portion of arriving steamers' cargoes. No attempt was made to touch the. general loading. The Adelaide and Melbourne Steamship Companies are amongst those affected. The latter company's steamer Sydney sailed without cargo. To-day's arrivals will add considerably to the list of vessels held up. The masters point out that an agreement with a currency of three years was recently signed with the wharf laborers, providing for the Is 3d rate. This had been broken without notice. Fear was expressed that if the demands of the coastal laborers were conceded the deep sea men would demand an increase to the extent of the extra amount they at present received. The Waterside Workers' Federation meets at Melbourne to-morrow to discuss the situation. ONE COMPANY CONCEDES THE DEMANDS. Deceived 20, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, October 20. Strike affairs are quiet. Vessels are tied up as they arrive, and coal lumpers continue bunkering. The Cains Co-oper-ative Company, owners of a number of small coasting vessels, have conceded the men's demands. Efforts are being made to secure a compromise to allow the Paloona's cargo of apples from Hobart to be unloaded, for fear of spoiling. THE STRIKERS OPTIMISTIC. Received 20, 11 p.m. Sydney, Last Night. The wharf strikers express themselves as optimistic in vegard to gaining their demands. POSITION UNCHANGED. Received 21, 12.50 am. Sydney, October 20. The position in respect to the wharf laborers is unchanged. The laborers refused to unload the Paloona's apples, of which there are ten thousand cases. It is now feared they will be allowed to rot. The fruit merchants offered to guarantee the extra threepence per hour demanded, but have not yet received a ' reply from the strikers. I SHIPOWNERS TAKE A HAND. I Received 20. The shipowners have wired the Wharf Laborers' Union to supply labor with which to work cargo, as provided for in the agreement, under penalty of a thousand pounds. The Registrar also wired the union leaders to attend a conference on Monday.
