CHEAPER MEAT WAXTED. ' By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Paris. October 19. All the Paris deputies have petitioned for the reduction of the Customs tariff on cattle and meat to the basis of the 1892 tariff. XO EXCEPTION. The rise in the food prices was one of the principal subjects discussed at the Council of Ministers at Rambouillet this afternoon (reported the Paris correspondent of the London Telegraph on the Bth of last month). The Ministers of Commerce and Agriculture had ordered an inquiry into the matter, and the reports were that France was no exception. There was a ri.se in food prices in the greater part of Europe owing to the extreme dryness of this summer and the ravages of insects. As to the measures to be taken to facilitate as far as possible a diminution of the cost of provisions, the following were resolved upon:—

(1) Facilities will lie given for the importation of cattle and sheep from the colonies.

(2) Steps will he taken to diminish some of the rigours against the importation of live stock from other countries and of frozen meat.

(3) Certain advantages will.be granted to cold storage depots. (4) The railways will lie .asked to facilitate tlie means of delivering farm product* and fresli fish direct on the markets.

(.1) The tariff on fodder for export will be suspended.

Finally, various measures were also proposed i'or simplifying the octroi system in the towns and communes, and also for empowi ring the local authorities, where they think lit. to establish communal co-operative market.-, and to compete with private establishments where lliey deem it advantageous to tin' public to do so. The co-operation of the commune; in the construction of workmen's houses and labor colonics, to reduce rent and the cost uf ]ivinir, has also been approve,!.
