ENTERTAINMENTS

"A MERE MAN'S EVENING." The fifth of the series of entertainments arranged by the young people of the Whiteley Memorial Methodist Church was held last night. The concert had been boomed as a "mere man's evening," and as the "mere men" who arranged it were dumb as to the nature of the programme the folk became curious and filled the hall. The performers had been to considerable pains in arranging the concert, and the camp fire songs' and yarns were very popular. The fun was fast, and the topical limericks which followed the modernised "Psalm of Life" caused hearty laughter. Manv of the items, too, were full of merit. The performers were the Rev. Mr. Burton, 'Messrs. J. Haslam, E. W. Guy, F. Hooker, Joll, F. Ashcr, M. Scott, A. Veale. When camp was struck there was a brief interval, and a drawingroom was set for the second half, which consisted of an overture by the orchestra, songs by Messrs. Haslam, Veale and Hooker, and recitations by Messrs. Lee Bullot and M. Scott. "Love at second sight" was the name of the farce which concluded the night's entertainment. It was a laughable mix-up of money and affection and mistaken identity, and was performed to the complete satisfaction of the audience. The part of the attractive widow was taken by Mr. R, Okey, and Messrs. Lee Bullot and X. Howell were lodgers, whilst ."Moses," with the £2OO bill to collect, was impersonated by Mr. M. *Scott. Mr. H. Lawn conducted the orchestra, and Mr. S. Lewis was the pianist.
