BRANCH RAILWAYS POLICY.

ONLY ONE LINE PROPOSED. In view of the declaration in the Financial Statement that further railways would be authorised this session, the Public Works Statement was looked forward to with special interest, but there is no further •declaration of general policy. But, referring to the North Island Main Trunk railway, the Minister said: "The opening of the North Island Main Trunk railway lias led to a considerable development of the saw-milling industry between Ohakune and Itaetihi, and urgent representations have been made to the Government as to the necessity for a branch line of railway from either Ohakune or Rangataua, to enable the numerous sawmills to gain access to the railway system, and also to connect the agricultural district of Raetihi with the Trunk line. Provision will accofdingly be made in this year's Railways Authorisation Bill for the construction of a branch railway for a distance of about nine miles. A vote of £15,000 is included in the estimates to make a commencement with the work.
