The proposal for a maiil subsidy to the Union Company, since the contract closed with the Xcw Zealand Govern--1 ment, lias been revived with a view to arranging an improved Australian service. The new proposal is that the Commonwealth should pay the company between £20,000 and £50,000 a year with £IO,OOO additional for steamers to call alternately at Brisbane and Melbourne. In return the company is prepared to provide an improved and more expeditious service.
