Mr. H. Okey, M.P., returned from Wellington last night. Mr. J. IT. Quilliam was a passenger from Palmerston North to New Plymonth last night.

ifr. John E. Goodwin, one of the earliest farmers in the Fairlie district, who has taken much interest in the progress of Fairlie, and was a member of the Tiniaru Harbor Board, died yesterday, aged 30. —Press message.

An Ottawa cablegram states that Earl Crey, Governor-General of Canada, ho» departed from Quebec and was accorded! a cordial send-off. Thousands lined the streets. The vessel with Earl Greyaboard passed the incoming steamer with the Duke of Connaught aboard oh the river St. Lawrence. Scores of messages of welcome await the Duke of Connaught from every city in the Dominion.

Mr. A. J. Litchfield, M.P., died at Blenheim on Wednesday afternoon. Deceased was one of the earliest pioneers in the Wairau, and was aged sixty-seven. He was one of the first students at Nelson College and had served on most of the principal local bodies, and was twice president of the Marlborough A. & P. Association. Mr. Litchfield was a collector of Maori curios and natural history objects, and had a fine museum and reference library of historical works of New Zealand. He leaves a widow and four sons and four daughters. A gentleman widely known and esteemed in Otago and Southland passed away in Invercargill yesterday morning in the person of Mr. Alexander Herdman. Mr. Herdman had been in poor health for a considerable time, and his death was not unexpected by .members of his family. Deceased was born in Edinburgh in 1840. He left his native town for Melbourne in the early sixties to take up a position in the Union Bank, and in ISUO crossed to New Zealand and joined the Dunedin branch of the same, institution. For many years he was manager of the bank at Oamaru. Later he associated himself with the Colonial Bank at Dunedin, and subsequently became manager of the Commercial Property Company. Eight or nine years ago he removed to Invercargill, and since has been living in comparative retirement. Mr. Herdman is survived by his widow and family of three sons and one daughter. The sons are Messrs. A. L. Herdman, M.P., J. G. Herdman (manager Dalgety & Co., Napier), and F. W. G. Herdman (manager Dalgety & Co., Hamilton). The daughter is Miss Herdman, a nurse in the Invercargill Hospital.—Press Association.
