POLICE COURT.
ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. At yesterday's sitting of the Police Court, Edward Bvden Cobuni was charged that on September 20 he hadi attempted to commit suicide. ; (Sergeant Dart prosecuted. Defendant, who elected to be dealt with summarily, pleaded guilty. Sergeant Dart detailed the circumstances, which have already been published. From a letter which the defendant had written there could 'be no doubt that the suicide was premeditated. Defendant had been drinking, but there was no evidence that he had been drinking t# excess. There were traces of insanity in defendant's family, but though Dr. Wylie had kept a close watch on him whilst in the hospital, there were no signs of insanity about defendant. His wifo was not very well and was worried a'bout having defendant at home, but his brother was willing to take him and look after him. The Sergeant suggested that if His Worship intended to order him to come up for sentence, that lie would like an order made for expenses, viz., eight days' watching at the hospital £3 4s and cab hire ss. He pointed out that they were not charging for the time the police were watching, but only for such time as they had to pay labor. His brother had suggested that a prohibition order should be taken out, and this he considered advisable, as if he was inclined to go astray drink would aggravate it. 11. Ooburn appeared and stated that he would look after his brother until he was right again. His previous employers had ike.pt his jab open, but witness thought he would look for something else.
The Magistrate said that there was nothing like work to keep the mind occupied. '
Sergeant Dart said defendant was well known, and would have no difficulty in getting work. He would be' able to work in a fortnight. The, Magistrate accordingly ordered defendant to come up for sentence when (Hilled upon within three months and to pay £8 9s expenses. Meanwhile a .prohibition order will be taken out against him.
