SHORTAGE OF LABOR
THE tIOMMTSSION'S FINDINGS. CAUSE CONSTERNATION AMONG LAISORITES. Bv Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 11, 9.33 p.m. Sydney, October 11. The interim report on the shortage of labor by the Labor Commission has caused consternation among the trades. Half the secretaries of the various unions declare that a large number of members are . out of work. Mr. McGowen declared that last year the present Government spent £40.000 on immigration, which was more than previous Governments had expended. This year it was proposed to spend £60,000. The Government will institute a system of nomination of certain occupations where employment can be guaranteed without displacement of the lal>or already engaged. General immigration is a matter for the Federal Government.
THE MANUFACTURERS' VIEWS. Received 12, 1 a.m. Sydney, October H. Contrary to the Trades Hall protest the president of the Chamber of Manufacturers declared that the Uilior Commissioners erred on the side of prudence ii; its estimate of the number of men required to make up the shortage in skilled trades.
