TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.") The Napier Park spring meeting takes place to-day. Numerous acceptances give promise of good racing, and each of the eight eve?)ts carded bears a, very open appearance. The Park Stakes, one mil* and a, quarter, has drawn thirteen horses, including Bobrikoff. The black champion will have a great load to carry to-day, and will lmve to run up to his best to give away over four stone to such consistent horses as Kilosteri, Ariom and others.
Buroco was given top-weight in the Hurdles at Waverley in error. The horse nominated was Euroto, a very ordinary sort of 9-stoner. Espartero is in great form ait present, and won fairly comfortably at Hastings last week. With. Gibs more in the saddle to-day he does not appear to be weighted out of it.
Jockey F. Lind, who was smashed up when Pleiades stumbled at Avondale, is nbw almost well again and expects to be riding art. Waverley.
The Victorian A.T.C. spring meeting will open at Caulfield on Saturday next. A great crowd of New Zealand horses are engaged at the gathering. Trainer Stewart Waddell is hard to beat for getting two-year-olds in racing trim early. Glade won at Hastings, and it is a moral that Haskyne, who will represent the Karamu stable at the Park races, will be well backed.
The New Zeaknd-bred pony Masonic has been weighted out of everything in 'Stralia, and was sent to India last week. Owners get tired of seeing 10st. and upwards against their prads' names in races with a Ost 71b minimum.
If form is anything to go on Polynices lias got in remarkably well amongst the hack hurdlers at Napier Park. The chestnut son of San Fran carried !)st 2lb in the Tomoana. Hurdles at Hastings last week, made most of the running, and was only 'beaten by a neck. The winner was the redoubtable Espartero. Gold Circle, always a favorite of mine, ran two good races at Hastings, and should go on winning in moderate company this spring.
'Says the Referee: —The excitement associated with running their horses in the Epsom caused the trainers of Broadsword and Los Angelos to neglect scratching them within the preserilxid time for the following race, the Spring Stakes. In consequence It. O'Doiuiell was fined £1 and A. Skirving £2. For failing to scratch Wirral for the Steeplechase, the gelding's owner was mulcted in £l.
The Marlborough spring meeting take* place to-day and to-morrow. The Dunedin meeting opens to-day, and will bo concluded on Saturday.
Faunus was oif color at Wanganni, but is reported to have brightened up since returning home, and should be in good nick at .Napier Park. Lady Medallist ran a fine' race in the Metropolitan, only being cut down ait the half-distance. Her record at Randwick was one first, one second, and a fourth—a fine one for a handicap marc. Taranaki horses are being bustled along in view of Waverley engagements. Acceptances are due this week, and this province promises to be well represented at the gathering.
