FIRE AT KATOOMBA. Sydney. October 10. A big fire started early this morning in the business centre "at Katoomba. There were no fire appliances, and firemen were sent from Sydney. The fire i» -supposed to have lieen caused by lightning. It destroyed Mulkuiey's large store, but was prevented from spreading to other buildings. The damage is in the vicinity of £15,000. THE SHEARERS' AWARD. Sydney, October 10. Mr. Justice Higgins will hear representations from both sides before finally settling the terms of the shearers' award for tlie whole of the southern districts. SEARCH FOR THE ROSEDALE. The Council of the Chamber of Manufacturers supports the proposed British Empire Exhibition in London. SINKING OF THE TAVIUNI. Sydney, October 10. At the enquiry into the Nera-Taviuni collision the captain of the Taviuni gave evidence that he could easily have passied the Nera had the lattef's towline not carried away. Other evidence pointed to the Nera's engines failing to obey the telegraph. COMMONWEALTH TRADE. Melbourne. October 10. The total trade of the Commonwealth last year was £134,300,000, an increase of £15,010,000. compared with the previous year. The average per head of population was £3O Ss. The imports totalled .€00,014.000, and tlie exports £74,431.000.
