ENGLAND'S LOW WAGES.

RISING WAVE OF DEMOCRACY. Tripping through the country districts of the British Islands, Sir William Lyne, in his recent Coronation visit, had an opportunity, more so than ever before, of hearing a good deal of the views of the people on social questions. The result of his travels, he said, had been to impress hiin with the fact that through the better education of the people a marked evolution was taking place, particularly in regard to their social and living conditions. The industrial revolution which is taking place is the culmination of it all.

"The wages paid were so low that I wonder anyone had the conscience to pay them. There is a tremendous spread of democracy, and it is tending, I believe, in the direction of increasing the wages and improving the living conditions of the masses.

"I was in Ireland, and I was shocked to find men with families earning 10s a week. Of that 3s had to be paid away in house rent. The cost of living in Ireland and England is not low by any means, and I found that the only things which could be purchased cheaply were gloves. How these poor people live I don't know, and yet they rear large families!"
