STRIKE AT ONEHUNGA
DRAINAGE WORKERS GO OUT. Bv Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. About twenty men employed on the tidal portion of the drainage works at Onehunga went on strike on Saturday for an increase of wages. They intimated to the foreman of works that the pay was insufficient as they had to work ever their boot tops in the mud, and they demanded 2s fid per hour (instead of Is 6d an hour), which was refused by Mr. Coulson, the contractor. When the tide was out, and the meii were to have started work, only three or four did so. Those who started workwere tillable to proceed, as they could not lift the heavy pipes without the help of the other men. About forty men are employed on the drainage works altogether, twenty at tidal work and the others at trench work in the streets. This morning the hvtter refused to torn to until their mates obtained their demands', so that the drainage works ni present arc at a 'Standstill. Mr. Coulson this morning paid off thirty men. He intends to engage others immediately. ......
