BURGLAIUES AT PALAIERSTOX. By Telegraph—Press Association. Palmerston North, Saturday. A daring series of burglaries was perpetrated at Palmerston last night. No fewer than five shops in the Square were entered from the right-of-way at the rear of the premises. The places entered were Mowlem's (tobacconist), Richardson's Boot Store, Westmoreland's (stationer) and Raven-hall's Land Agency. The intruders ran riot among the goods, scattering the articles and damaging the appliances. Nothing of great value was stolen. Evidently the burglars were after money. The operations were rather amateurish.
FIRE BRIGADES DISPUTE. Wellington, Saturday. Rumors of trouble between the Fire Brigade staff and the City Council are about to-day. It is. even''said that the firemen have threatened to strike. The man are not satisfied with the reply of the Council to their petition for better pay. The men claim that the present rate is not a fair living wage for the work engaged in, and dops not compare favorably with other centres. Increases amounting to V.)l were granted at the last meeting of the Council, but the men are far from satisfied with them, and today asked fur a more favorable settlement. As the demands are urgent the .Mayor summoned the Council together and heard the men. A committee was appointed to meet the men again on Wednesday. In the meantime neither the Council nor the. men are prepared to make any statement.
THE <;koroes fuxd. Wellington, Saturday. His Excellency the Governor lias received from the Karl of Slnulbroke, secretary of the (leorges Fund, an acknowledgment of the £7O collected in Xcw Zealand. Lord Stradbroke informs the Governor that a total of £3400 was collected throughout the Empire, and it is proposed to present His Majesty with a badge of St. George out of this sum, and to invest the remainder to provide a scholarship for boys going into the navy.
THE MAWSOX EXPEDITION. Christehurcli. Saturday. Air. Robert. Speight, assistant curator of the Canterbury Aluseum, has been offered a .position as geologist to Dr. Alawson's expedition and the leadership of a party which would have Macquaric Island as one of its bases. Mr. Speight will probably have to decline the offer, but says he would be glad to spend some .months on the Macquaric Island next summer if arrangements for his transport can be made.
