CHARGED BY AN ELEPHANT.
CffiCUS GROOM IXJURED. John Jones, employed as a groom a- , Wirt'h's Circus, was charged Viv the ImV, elephant "Jumbo," at Wangaratta, Victoria, last week, and was taken to the hospital in a critical condition. The, elephant drove one of his tusks into Jones' chest. Then, in its efforts to toss him into the air, the elephant tore the flesh along his chest and neck to the car. A fearful wound was inflicted. The sinews and muscles of the neck were torn, the windpipe exposed, and the arteries broken. The man succeeded in getting away as the elephant made a second charge. A doctor was called in, and after giving the man relief ordered his removal to the hospital. There he was operated on. The operation was regarded as satisfactory; and hopes are entertained of the man's recovery.
"Jumbo" was prevented from making further charges by an onslaught of sledge hammers and spikes freely used by circus hands.
