THE PRICE OF TOBACCO.
AN INCREASE THREATENED. London, August 25. There arc signs of an advance in the price of tobacco. For some time the tobacco manufacturers have been much concerned by the high price of the raw leaf, which has increased 20 per cent, during the past few months, this following a previous advance of fully 100 per cent. The situation is now becoming acute, and the manufacturers say that the only (possibility of relief lies in an all-round advance in prices to the consumer. This latest advance in the price of raw material lias been brought about by fears of a serious shortage in the crop in the United States, owing to the drought, and the carefully planned restriction of the acreage planted. The growing of the. tobacco leaf in Virginia, Kentucky and Carolina, whence the bulk of the British manufacturers' supplies is drawn, is now dominated by combinations of growers formed to fight the American trust and British combine, and pledged not to sell the crop below a certain fixed price.
