LADIES' CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. TJI.E SEMI-FINALS. By TJeltgraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The New Zealand Indies' championship meeting was continued lit Ileretaunga links u>-day in glorious summer weather. The links were in a state of great perfection, and the attendance of the spectators was large, The seini-fmals was the chief attraction. Ureal interest cen-' trod in the, matches. Miss Gould (Otago) and Mrs. R. Orbell (North Ota go) had a great battle in their game, which was followed by quite an army of enthusiasts. Mrs. Orbell, who had shown splendid form in defeating such stmng players as Miss A. l'earce, the Wellington champion, and Mrs. Guy Williams, ex-New Zealand champion, was generally expected to win. She played in a, dashing and heady style, but met an antagonist who was as steady as a rock, playing with great accuracy in her long game, and with but few mistakes on the green. It was a battle royal throughout. They were all square at the fifth, but then Miss Gould forged ahead, and was 2 up at the ninth. The next three were halved. Miss Gould taking the 12th anil Kith, being hwe 3 up. Undismayed at the reverse. Mrs. Orbell put up a magnificent uphill fight, taking the 14th and 15th. Miss Gould took the 16th and was donny two, but by fine play Mrs. Orbell won' the two next, making the game all square. At the 18th excitement ran high as the extra hole was played. Roth were together on the edge of the green in two. Mrs. Orbell approached wide and just missed her putt. Miss Gould's approach was three feet from the pin, and she holed ■in 4 to 5, and won a great game by 1 up at the liltli. both players being hcartilv cheered.
Miss" 1/. Brandon (Wellington) beat the New Zealand champion. Miss Collins (Wellington), easily by 4 up and 3 to play. Miss Brandon played with wonderful accuracy on her long game, but constantly missed easy putts, in most cases taking three on the green. Jibs Collins, whose voyage from England has spoilt her previous good form, was very erratic, alternately pulling and slicing, making all sorts of trouble. In consequence three times her ball got into the river, and she found numerous bunkers. The champion showed superiority on the green, or her defeat would have been much more severe.
The final to-morrow between Miss Gould and Miss Brandon will be a Smith v. North Island affair, and opinions greatly differ as to who will win. The Otago player, who is of strong physique, drives a long ball, and is very steady all through. Miss Brandon, by perfect timing, gets a surprisingly long ball, considering her lack of height and power. She lias been playing almost faultless golf on the course, and if she is beaten it will be through her poor work on the green. At the dose of the game the visitors are to be entertained by the Wellington Ladies' Golf Cluib at a big afternoon tea. when the prizes will bo" presented by His Excellency the Governor.
The Coronation medal was also competed for. with the following result: .Miss V. Anderson. 80—22--08: Miss Grav. !>:i-1.->—7B: Mrs. Donald, 97—19 7S; Mrs., Cox. 95—17—78.
