BAPTIST CHURCH.
ANNUAL CONFERENCE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Napier, Last Night. The report of the Sunday School Committee showed that four new schools had been opened during tlhe year, 527 children being added to the rolls and 31 new teachers engaged. Entrants for Bap-. tist Union examinations numbered 190 from -22^ schools. The number of passes was satisfactory, but the report stated that the composition and spelling of the children were wretched.. The examiner for the senior grade (the Rev. Howard Elliott) said it was a reflection upon our public schools system that youths of 16 to 18 years were net able to write neatly and clearly or compose and spell with greater efliciency. The afternoon" session was devoted to discussions #f questions of church membership. The Rev. W. Hay reported upon the Australasian Congress. The Rev. R. S. Gray, who has just returned from a trip round the world, and who represented the {Baptist Union of New Zealand at the Baptist Union of Great Britain, gave a very interesting account of his trip. To-morrow there will be a picnic, and on Sunday visiting ministers will occupy the pulpits of the local churches.
