A VICTORIA CROSS.

The only Victoria Cross won by a member of the volunteer forces of New Zealand has been handed to the Mayor of Auckland for safe keeping in the Art Oallcry. Under the will of the late Mrs. Charles Heaphy the Victoria cross bestowed upon her husband..the late Major Charles Ueaphy, was directed to remain in the custodv of her brother (the late Mr. W. 11. Churtoii) and after that to be handed over to the Auckland Art Gallery. The interesting memento was accordingly handed over to-day. The incident that led up to Major Heaphy receiving the cross occurred during the V.'aikato Maori War. One day a number of soldiers of the 40th Regiment were bashing in the Manga pi ko river, when they were lired upon by the enemy. In *he en-.uiiig encounter Captain Heaphy was in the -hottest part of the struggle, when three soldiers fell. Captain Heaphy. while aiding one of them, made a miraculous escape. He was slightly wounded, while his clothes were perforated with bullets.
