CANTERBURY J.C. AFFAIRS. MEETING DISCUSSES TWO IMPORTANT MATTERS. Christchurch, October 4. At a meeting of members of the Canterbury Jockey Club, the chairman (Mr. A. Boyle) mentioned the question of the provision of a ten-shilling totalisator. He stated that the matter had been seriously discussed by the committee and had not been dropped. After going into details tile committee had found that extensive alterations to the totalisator buildings would be necessary if a. tenshilling totalisator were installed, and these could not be effected before the November meeting. In the meantime, to relieve the congestion at the totalisator, a number of extra windows would be added, and further consideration of the question of installing a ten-shilling totalisator would be held over until after the Oup meeting. The question of limiting the membership of the club was next raised. Mr. Boyle stated that the accommodation at the course was only just adequate for the present membership list. It would be an unpopular move to take away from the public accommodation further room for members, and while they did not desire to limit the membership for other reasons it would not be fair to accept members to whom they could not offer adequate accommodation. A suggestion was wade that possibly a reduction of the ladies' tickets given to members from three to two would ease the congestion, but it was pointed out that the ladies did not trespass upon members' reserves.
In reply to a question it was stated that the'membership list was now 292, and the subscribers' list 75.
Mr. Starky suggested that a raising of the subscription might achieve the desired end. but the chairman opposed the proposal, as being distinctly unpopular. "It would not," he said, "bo good policy. We don't want to stop people joining, hut we simply have no room for more members."
It was agreed to hold a special meeting to coasider this question, and Mr. J. Barlow gave notice that at a special general meeting, to be called for the purpose of altering the rules, be would move that the .membership should be limited to 300, and the subscribers to 100.
